Ready for the Adventure

Eric and I went to bed at 9:30 last night after a perfect Sunday. We woke up late; had some leftover pizza and Lychee tea for breakfast; listened to a radio program called “A way with words;” made green curry to bring to a Super bowl party; and hung out at Eric’s friend’s house to watch the Super bowl, but mostly, we sat around, ate, and played video games. So, it was nice to get to bed early after a hard day full of leisure. Yes, life is that good.
I thought it’d be great to get tons of sleep and wake up at 6:30 am feeling refreshed and ready to start the workweek. But, no… I laid in bed for an hour, thought about lesson plans, went over a mental checklist of to dos in my head, and pretty much freaked myself out because I didn’t cross off anything on my to do list. After I was done working myself up, I fell asleep at a reasonable hour and got plenty of sleep. But, I still had a hard time getting up. I woke up tired and resentful about having to be up when it was dark and so cold outside. I wanted to crawl back into bed where Eric was still sleeping - stretched out and comfy. He didn’t have to wake up for another hour… no fair.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I just don’t like waking up early in the morning and stressing out about work. I enjoy being a teacher. But, it’s times like this that I just feel like I’m part of the rat race. While I enjoy our life in San Francisco, I know there’s other ways of living that we still have to give a go. And maybe, we'd work just as much, but it'd be a worthwhile experience anyhow. So, today I’m more resolute than ever. It’s time for Thailand… and for the adventure to begin.

The Good Life Still Under Way

Pam and I always give ourselves mottos to live by, or rather slogans to describe our lives. Because our good attitude is what's behind the wheel, and the description is what follows as a reminder of our good choices. Hah, always congratulating ourselves half tongue in cheek. Lately it's been "The Good Life" because that's what we're always telling ourselves we're living. Here in San Francisco we're having a great time. Living in the city is the best. Amazing food, art, music, hiking, camping. It's close to Tahoe, so you can snowboard great mountains if you want. Even walking to the corner for groceries and cooking together at home is reason for a celebration of our good fortune. The down side is that it's expensive to live here, and we feel like we spend entirely too much time paddling without going anywhere. We get by fine and feel like we take full advantage of our free time here, but realize this isn't the only place in the world we can live like this. The other thing is the weather. Kind of cold a lot of the time.

We came up with another slogan: "The Adventure," to describe our life in the near future as we move to Thailand to teach English and experience a new way of living. Yes, of course beautiful beaches and 80 degree ocean water contributed to our choosing that location. Also the modest cost of living and relaxed pace are appealing and worth a hearty first hand test drive. Currently we're in this in-between slogan stage, still living the good life, but preparing to embark on the adventure. Maybe I should come up with a title for this period... nah, this period will be over before we know it.

The Good Life and the Adventure

Pam and I are in the process of preparing for our buying a one way ticket to Bangkok and beginning a life that should find us as English teachers abroad. I wanted to start a blog before we were too far along in doing our research, so that we could document our adventure from before we even get there. The research we've already done is worth posting online for our own and others' reference.

My first web idea related to travel is an online travel book club which can be found at http://treklit.com. It's a place where good travel literature is recommended, critiques are given, dialogues created and travel suggestion passed along relating to regions around the world. What I plan to do here will be the specific log of our preparation, arrival, and experiences enjoyed along our journey to becoming teachers in Thailand and what we learn and think about living there. I'll link this blog and my travel book site together because they are both travel related, but this place will serve as our online journal.
